The Tories have launched an investigation after a female MP received threats from a Conservative colleague urging her to quit the party following the leadership battle.

Julian Smith, the chief whip, is to hold an inquiry into WhatsApp messages sent by an unnamed male Tory MP to fellow Conservative Antoinette Sandbach calling her a “a disgrace.”

She told The Daily Telegraph that she decided to publicise the messages as it was the second time the same male MP had sent an abusive message directly to her.

“Once bitten, twice shy,” she said, linking it to controversy over “dirty tricks” in the leadership race and her opposition to a no-deal Brexit.
